Compensatory Mechanisms of Hypovolemic Shock

Hypovolemia reduces intravascular volume, leading to decreased venous return (preload) and a fall in stroke volume via the Frank–Starling relationship. The resulting drop in arterial pressure triggers baroreceptor-mediated sympathetic activation, causing tachycardia and increased myocardial contractility, along with peripheral vasoconstriction. These compensatory responses help maintain cardiac output and preserve perfusion to vital organs despite reduced circulating volume.
