Acute Retronychia

Acute Retronychia

This photo shows acute retronychia, with proximal nail fold inflammation and yellow discoloration of the nail plate (xanthonychia). Granulation tissue formation is suggested by swelling of the proximal nail fold without purulence. The lateral nail folds are not significantly affected because the trauma is primarily to the proximal nail fold and underlying nail matrix. Acute paronychia often involves the lateral nail folds.
