母体死亡率とは、出生（生存している胎児の分娩）10万件当たりのこのような死亡の数です。

2017年には、母体死亡率は出生10万件当たり2件（ポーランド）から1150件（南スーダン）までの幅がありました（これらの国は以下に示されていません）。米国の母体死亡率は他の多くの欧米諸国よりも高くなっています（出生10万件当たり19件）。
