Episiotomy

For an episiotomy, a doctor injects a local anesthetic to numb the area and makes an incision in the area between the openings of the vagina and anus (the perineum). An episiotomy is sometimes done to widen the opening of the vagina and thus make delivery of a baby easier. It prevents tissues from overstretching and may prevent tissues from tearing raggedly.
