Verruca Vulgaris -ˌvəl-ˈgar-əs, -ˈger-

By Wingfield E. Rehmus, MD, MPH, Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Associate Member of Department of Dermatology;, University of British Columbia;BC Children’s Hospital, Division of Dermatology

Verruca vulgaris is common warts.

Verruca vulgaris is caused by infection with human papillomavirus and frequently infects the cuticle (the skin at the base of the nail) and sometimes the area beneath the nail (see Warts). Nail biting (onychophagia) can spread this infection. Warts in these areas are especially difficult to treat. Freezing (cryotherapy) with liquid nitrogen may be effective.
